Laurence Stephen Lowry was an English artist born on November 1, 1887. He is famous for his urban industrial landscape paintings that mainly depict Pendlebury, Greater Manchester (where he lived and worked for more than 40 years) as well as Salford and its vicinity. As a child, Lowry was fond of drawing but did not get much encouragement from his parents. After leaving school, he started attending evening art classes and continued doing so for twenty years. Lowry’s father was a clerk in a firm of chartered accountants. His mother was a talented pianist. Lowry inherited his mother’s love of music and would often attend concerts at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. He died on February 23, 1976.
