Tove Jansson was a Swedish-speaking Finnish author, novelist, painter, illustrator and comic strip author. She was born on August 9, 1914 in Helsinki. Her family was part of the Swedish-speaking minority of Finland and was an artistic one. Jansson studied art from 1930 to 1938 in Stockholm, Helsinki and Paris. Her first solo art exhibition was in 1943. She is best known for her Moomin books which have been translated into more than thirty languages. In 1966 she received the prestigious H.C. Andersen-medaljen for her contribution to children’s literature. She died on June 27, 2001 in Helsinki.
